Alkyne-cholesterol is a special type of cholesterol made by Selectoprobe. It has an extra part called an alkyne group. This alkyne group can react with other chemicals using 'click chemistry', which needs a copper catalyst.
Alkyne-cholesterol cannot be used in living cells because it needs copper ions. However, it helps in easily detecting cholesterol using different scientific methods. It can also be linked with a fluorescent dye called BODIPY, making it useful for studying how cholesterol moves around inside cells, especially in parts like mitochondria, the endoplasmic reticulum, and the Golgi apparatus.
